Design Wall Monday
Well, technically these wavy blocks are on my design wall, but they don't officially belong to me. These blocks are for the Block Lotto - a monthly block that the fabulous Sophie picks for us and we make up to 9 blocks that are then used as chances in a drawing for a share of all the blocks made! Isn't that fun?
This month is a curved rail - a simple introduction to curved piecing. The blocks had to be made from batiks and they are made 3 at a time. Click here for the tutorial from our fearless leader Sophie.
I have a confession. I don't like batiks. As a matter of fact, I dislike them pretty intensely. I told my BQFF friend Kelly that I want to figure out a way to use them in a quilt that might change my mind about them. I had a hard time finding colors and patterns that I liked for this project, but I wanted to challenge myself to work with them on a small scale to kinda dip my toe in the batik waters. And I think I found a happy medium here.
I took an art class in high school where we made batiks. I was really amazed by the process and deeply appreciate the work and craftsmanship that go into traditional batiks. I guess I have a hard time with the mottled, and sometimes muddy, colors and the some of the motifs. I love ferns, but...
